7mm scratchbuilt station

courtesy Keith Barber

An excellent scratchbuilt station in 7mm scale, made by Keith Barber. The model won Keith a trophy at the Telford Show, and featured in an article in Railway Modeller.

The model incorporates card, wood and appropriate castings, with each brick individually applied and painted.

The overall design of the station follows that of William Clarke, a freelance railway engineer who designed a number of stations on GWR branches.

Clarke's designs were used on at least ten branch and secondary routes, and at least 24 stations on the GWR system could be attributed to him.

This included the Kingsbridge, Bridport and Abbotsbury branches, the Bridport and North Somerset line (including the branch to Camerton) and several lines in the Welsh borders, such as the Kington branch.

The station closely resembles Clarke's stations at Presteign and Dymock, and is in effect a brick version of that at Abbotsbury.

The latter provided the basis for Ray Bounsall's fictional station on his Woodleigh-Sub-Mendip layout.

Thanks to Ray Bounsall for helping with the above information, and to Tim Venton for shedding further light on William Clarke.
