Change of ownership and hosting - a note from the new webmaster

Somewhile back I read that Mikkel would not be updating this site, but would continue to host it as an online resource. In conversation with him in another place, I mentioned that if he ever did stop hosting it, I would be glad to take it on. The bottom line for me was that I've been a fan of this site since its inception, and I didn't want it to disappear. To cut a short story short, Mikkel was happy for me to take it on, and his Claranet host and our host (1&1) did the necessary handshaking and the transfer of the domain name, and the hosting of it on 1&1, is now complete.

The domain name gwr.org.uk is actually owned by Trevor Grout, since he administers the account space on 1&1.  I will be the webmaster.

As Mikkel noted in his signoff, the web has changed enormously since the inception of GWR Modelling, and of the lesser demand now for a site such as this, and to be honest, I am currently in two minds between keeping it as an archive or re-opening it as 'business as usual'. What I will be doing, although in no great hurry, is getting familiar with the existing coding, and taking an opportunity to tidy up the structure and appearance of the pages. Further than that I cannot predict, except to say that I will try to keep to the spirit of Mikkel's founding objectives.

I am mindful that this site, like any site, is always about the efforts and goodwill of its contributors far more than where it is hosted or who happens to be holding the reigns, so I am going to take the opportunity of thanking all the existing contributions, assuring them of my continuing goodwill, and of course of thanking Mikkel for his valiant 10-year stint.

If anyone wants to contact me about anything, feel free to do so via the Site Info page.

Russ Elliott

In this update Steve Daly has compiled overview lists of the main diagrams for GWR Brake Vans and Shunters Trucks, along with sample allocations for later years. Although you'll have to look elsewhere for the actual drawings, these overviews are useful in identifying the right period, running numbers etc for our models. There is also an update to John Dolan excellent index to the GWR Journal.

Good stuff from Down Under and Over There. From the" Welsh Mafia" in Australia (in this case Dave Fox and Norm Hodges) come two models of GWR might-have-been locos - a fascinating subject for sure. From Ted Kanas comes an addition to the "Grand Wulfrunian pages", in memoriam of some interesting stock that he has recently parted with.

With this update Steve Daly reminds us of a somewhat neglected aspect of the GWR corporate image - namely the colours and designs of staff uniforms. Even in the smaller scales we owe it to those hard-working men and women to get at least the overall colour of their uniforms right.

The many fans of Dean's 4-wheel passenger stock will be interested to read Steve Farrow's account of how he used Shirescenes' 4mm conversion sides to transform a standard Ratio kit into something new. As will be seen in the Projects section, Steve's contribution dovetails nicely with the site's existing coverage of simple, low-cost ways of producing those charming GWR 4-wheelers. Meanwhile in another part of the woods, a certain Malcolm Mitchell has been crafting a rather nice 7mm item to admire, emulate or - well - simply envy!

In this update, Ted Kanas ventures forth with - dare I say it - a Diesel loco. Not just any old Diesel though, but an impressive 7mm "Warship" Class, which so strongly symbolized the Western Region's efforts to retain a degree of autonomy in locomotive policy. Ted also has something for the pre-nationalization purists, in the shape of some rather nice studies of the "Grand Wulfrunian Railway".

Eye-candy from two stalwart contributors this week: A rather nice 72xx heavy hauler has been added to Roger Bailey's stable, and Maurice Pearce leaves his beloved N Gauge for a moment to illustrate what putting atmosphere into your models is all about.

As a contrast to the graceful M&SWJR curves and liveries of the last update, Ted Kanas brings us a rather different - but to me equally satisfying - perspective on the GWR this week, with his workmanlike 56xx in solid BR black.

What's this 'ere then - red locos on GWR Modelling? Yes indeed: Thanks no least to Neil Lover the M&SWJR makes a forceful entry on the site, reminding us of the varied and interesting (if sometimes challenging) scope that lies in modelling the independent companies absorbed by the GWR. To emphasize this point further, the Features section has been given a general face-lift with additional links and illustrations on some of the pages. Apart from this, the exhibition pages have been updated with snapshots of GWR layouts featured at past Scalefour Society shows, courtesy of David Lane. These have been removed from the Scalefour Society's own webpages to make room for other entries, and so have come here for their final resting place.

Robin Sweet has sent in photos of his AA3 Toad to 7mm scale, showing off nicely the model gleaming in etched brass. Sometimes it almost feels a pity to paint brass models ! Apart from that, the results from the "Layout Type" poll are in - with some slightly surprising results. There will be a new poll as soon as I can find a new poll provider.

The introduction of the Dapol N gauge range has opened up new horizons for GWR modellers in that scale. As a case in point, Maurice Pearce shows us his new 517 Class loco converted from the Dapol 14xx - yet another chapter in Maurice's excellent Kingswear saga.

Back after a prolonged house-move (why do we do it?). Speaking of buildings, the new page this week shows some of the wonderful branch designs found on the Abbotsbury branch, nicely reproduced in 7mm by Invertrain Model Railways. There is also a new update to John Dolan's GWRJ Index, which now includes all issues up to No. 53.

More West Wales flavour this week, in the shape of a photographic introduction to some of the baseboards and buildings on Pete Morris' upcoming 4mm layout "Pentrecwrt". This includes a very appealing loco shed based on that at Newcastle Emlyn - always a favourite of mine.

The West Wales scene is nicely illustrated in this update, with a look at some of the stock that has been plying the rails on Pete Morris' excellent OO layout "Drefach Felindre". Of particular note is the ex-Manchester & Milford Railway stock, a rare sight indeed. Pete has recently sold of this stock to finance another project - more on this next week.

Seven new pages have been added to the "Features" section, made up mostly of Graeme Tyrer's very evocative photos of Watlington station - taken not 50 years ago, but only last summer! There's also a page for would-be modellers of this well-known branch. Incidentally, Graeme's OO layout of Watlington has been featured on this site for a while - you can find it here.

It's a new year and a new livery for GWR Modelling. I thought I'd change the view a bit. Incidentally, you can now bookmark individual pages if you like, rather than going via the main page every time. In the update this week there is heavy metal 7mm power from Ted Kanas:
