Cambrian GWR 6-ton Crane and Match Truck

by Kevin Phare

The purpose of these pictures is to show how I built the kit, as the attached instructions included with the model are minimal with some very unclear pictures included. Most of the instructions are written with the pieces not identified on the sprues, perhaps numbering them on the sprues and referring to that would help considerably during the build. This is my interpretation of the construction – pictures and information are very sparse for this model so some builder's license is needed at times.

No wheels come with the model so I brought some from Cambrian.

The kit is available from Cambrian model rail.

I hope this photo sequence helps anyone planning to build this rather unusual and lovely model but confused by the instructions.

All the bits laid out. There is minimal flash but quite a few bits with mould lines where the two halves haven't quite lined up – fiddly but sortable.

The chain is provided in the kit, and is 40 links per inch.

With the wagons built up, these are all the pieces for the crane, cleaned up. Cambrian GWR 6-ton crane and match truck

The match truck and crane underframe were simple builds so I will just include some pictures for guidance Cambrian GWR 6-ton crane and match truck

Now for the crane itself – I shan't describe a blow-for-blow build, rather show each substage as I progressed and hopefully you can work out the pieces needed.

In this sequence, the 'T' support was only glued on one side of the T so I could pull the sides apart to get the cross rods in easier.

At this point it was difficult to take pictures of the jib construction because you had to hold, glue, and line it up, and the setting of glue left no hands to take a pictures. The following one is all I have showing lining up wasn't easy – filing and filler needed...

The crane hook fixing lug (the white bit) was copied from the Warren Branch – I thought that's a good idea. Now all fixed together. Cambrian GWR 6-ton crane and match truck

A view of the painted crane and match truck on Kevin's Little Muddle layout . Lead weight has been added to the underside as the model is very light, Sprat & Winkle couplings, with a 3-link joining the pair. Transfers are a mixture of Fox and HMRS, and the allocation name was cobbled together.
